Description

Upstream processing is the phase of the biomanufacturing in which host cells are used to produce a product.  In this course, students will receive lectures on basic lab skills and cell culture processing.  This is followed by hands-on training on gowning, hood operation and performing a cell culture passage using a Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell line.

Objectives

Attendees who have completed this course should be able to:

  1. Explain the basics of biotechnology and the key biomanufacturing steps.
  2. Explain the goals of upstream processing. Describe the unique characteristics of mammalian cell culture, the operating steps, and analytical testing performed.
  3. Demonstrate proper gowning technique.
  4. Perform a hood cleaning operation.
  5. Make calculations and perform a cell culture passage and demonstrate proper use of a cell counter.
