Biofuels: Analyzing Cellulase

Biofuels: Analyzing Cellulase

Biofuels provide many environmental and economic benefits including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, making use of renewable resources, and the ability to create fuel locally. In this activity students explore the vital role the carbon cycle, enzymes, and microbes play in the creation of biofuels. Students will learn the difference between first and second generation biofuels and will learn how NC industries are using microbes to convert non-food agricultural waste materials (e.g. husks, leaves, stems, and inedible grasses) into high dollar fuel.
